( Conservation of natural resources and environment )

Meridijan works on strengthening public awareness, as well as education and encouraging young people to organized and meaningful projects for the protection and preservation of nature and the environment in the Blidinje Nature Park. We want to encourage the construction of quality non-institutional support for the sustainability of biodiversity and geodiversity in the area of Blidinje Lake and achieve effective protection of natural resources, primarily by educating the public about responsible behavior in / towards nature.

Tourists and excursionists staying in the Park currently have a significant responsibility in relation to the ecological, biological, cultural and natural environment. Unfortunately, due to the lack of public awareness of the importance and state of the environment, human violence against nature in the Blidinje Nature Park is increasing from year to year. The key role in preserving this area in the future will have individuals and visitors, who, with appropriate education and public campaigns, can be educated about the condition, significance and endangerment of the natural environment in which they reside. Lack of public awareness about this problem will inevitably result in a chain reaction of environmental degradation, due to too much human intervention in the environment. Meridijan was created with one of the main objectives being defending and recovering of the last untouched species, food, land, water, and wildlife of the area the Dinaric Alps, with special focus on Cvrsnica being the highest mountain in Herzegovina, through strategies and projects that originate concrete actions of NGO network and local communities, but also to educate and increase the environmental awareness levels of the growing population of hikers and tourists to the area. We support mountain activities and practices that promote self-sufficiency, respect for nature and shared enjoyment. The activities of Meridijan are focused on the following topics:

  • Protection of water resources. The role of water in the Nature Park is multifaceted – it is a key need of people, and a home and habitat for different animal species. Lately, it has become the final destination of many pollutants released into the environment. The area of the Park is dominated by carbonate rocks, which makes it difficult to retain water, so this area is not rich in surface water. Therefore, it is important to preserve the quality of water from the Park area, the pollution of which would have major consequences for the surrounding area, given that water from this area drains over a wide area around the Park and that many water bodies are connected. Pollution, overexploitation and physical changes in water habitats are increasingly reducing water quality and availability. In order to continue to enjoy the clean water of lakes and springs, we need to work on education and protection projects to avoid possible disasters.
  • Protection of flora and fauna. The richness of the landscape and the great diversity of plants, from Mediterranean to high mountain species, including a large number of endemics, make this area a special ecological reserve. Due to the uncontrolled disposal of garbage, the collection of medicinal plants and poaching, we are witnessing the extinction of certain species of flora and fauna. Some species are completely extinct, while the survival of others is seriously endangered. There are numerous natural landmarks in the Blidinje Nature Park, such as the beautiful munika forest, which is also the largest complex in Europe, deep canyons, lakes, springs, but also interesting wildlife such as chamois, roe deer, wild boar, brown bear, fox, wolf and bobcat. These species, which include both predators and large herbivores, initiate ecological processes and play a key role in the natural functioning of the entire ecosystem of the Park. Informing the public about the importance of their protection will have long-term benefits both for humans and wildlife.
  • Strengthening public awareness of the importance of environmental protection and waste management. Through our activities, we strive to educate the public about the right attitude towards nature, and to increase people’s awareness of waste management in a way that does not endanger human health and the environment. By conducting media campaigns and getting to know the public in an educational and informative way, it affects the environmental awareness of the local population, but also of all visitors to the Park.
  • By encouraging the increase of energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources, we can protect and improve the quality of the air and the ozone layer, and act preventively on possible climate change for the purpose of sustainable development. The area of the Blidinje Nature Park abounds in a large number of sunny days, but, unfortunately, the use of solar energy for the production of heat or electricity is at a very low level. We want to promote the use of renewable energy sources, which achieves significant savings, but also contributes to environmental protection.
  • Soil protection. Raising awareness of the application of natural organic fertilizers in agricultural activities would reduce pollution and preserve the soil, as well as Blidinje Lake and the fauna that inhabits it. The introduction of organic food farming would have a positive impact on human health and nature protection, given that organic production preserves soil fertility, flora and fauna, water and atmosphere. It enables the nature balance and thus preserves biodiversity.

Our mission is to provide information, education and encouragement to the local community, especially young people to become carriers of activities that will save this natural area, wildlife habitats and water for the common good and heritage for future generations, and maintain a diverse and clean area with clean air, water and soil.
